One of the things I enjoy about our "calling" in nursing is how each one of our stories is unique. Even though you may be someone who knew God was leading you to nursing, or maybe you weren't sure or did not even know the Lord before you became a nurse, we can be rest assured that God was directing our lives to serve him.
I decided to become a nurse prior to becoming a Christian. I was working in the restaurant business and was tired of the minimal money and horrible hours. I know don't laugh, for I didn't know about "shifts" in nursing then. I had always been interested in health, the body and science and was beginning to look into some type of health care career. A neighbor of mine, advised me to be an RN. "Don't do anything else," she had said. At the time, it was summer in Palm Springs, and it used to be that the resort staff was laid off during the summer months for very few people vacationed in the resorts when the thermometer reaches over 120. Not so true anymore.
I got a job as a CNA in a nursing home and even though to this day, it was the hardest physical job I ever did, it was the greatest! I loved caring for people and building relationships with the cognitively intact residents. At the same time, I enjoyed the total care of the bed bound and Alzheimer's patients. The staff there were very supportive and told me, "If you can do this, you will be a great RN." I believe this is true today, for the organizational skills really have benefited me as an RN.
My family moved to the San Francisco Bay Area where I started plugging away at those prerequisites. During this time, I became a Christian and had to stop and question whether I was doing what God would have me do. I had a wonderful Christian friend, who assured me that God had been directing me to Him and to nursing school all along.
I entered my second year of nursing school as a single parent and experienced a very difficult time in my life. I experienced challenges that I couldn't have faced nor conquered without the Lord's direct hand on my life. He gave me strength to complete the nursing program, managed my finances, help me find housing, and guided me to a full-time day shift RN job, when the market was very tight.
God proved to me that he not only worked in my life prior to my commitment to him, but also that he would always by my provider.
I would love to hear your "calling"!
